Custom Runoff Hopper for an Industrial Garbage Press
This custom runoff hopper was designed and fabricated as part of an industrial garbage press built for a recycling facility in Drayton, Ontario.
As wet cardboard and packaging waste passed through the press, liquid released during compression was collected beneath the processing chamber and directed toward the next step of the recycling process. Rather than functioning as a separate piece of equipment, the hopper formed part of the overall machine and was fabricated alongside the surrounding assemblies.
Like the press itself, the hopper was manufactured for a specific installation. Its dimensions, outlet location, mounting points, and supporting structure were established by the machine it would become part of rather than by a standard product specification.
Fabricated Around the Press
The hopper could not be designed independently of the machine, with components like the compression chamber determining where liquid left the process, the screening assembly influencing where runoff entered the hopper, and the downstream pumping arrangement establishing where it needed to leave.
Supporting the Liquid Handling System
Once liquid was separated from the material inside the press, it needed a defined path through the rest of the equipment and facility. The hopper became the first stage of that path.
Its role was to receive runoff directly beneath the processing area and transfer it toward the next step of the collection system. Positioning, outlet location, and the relationship with adjoining components all influenced how the fabrication was laid out.
